If you are lucky enough to live in a Sure Start area, you can borrow a variety of toys for your children for a little as 30p a fortnight. Membership to the Toy Library enables your child to enjoy a variety of exciting and stimulating toys, which can be great fun and can also promote learning.  And if you live in a Sure Start area, you do not even have to pay to join.

 

Sure Start works with children under four and their families to promote and develop health and well-being.  It aims to help children reach their full potential and reduce the stresses of family life.  The services are open to all parents and carers with children aged four and under, living in the Sure Start area, regardless of income.

The British Red Cross provides door-to-door transport for people who cannot get about easily, restoring their freedom and independence.  By providing drivers with suitable vehicles, and escorts where needed, it becomes possible to make essential journeys and other trips that make life more pleasurable.

We provide transport for people who are unable to use public transport and have no transport of their own.  It is mainly operated by volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles or own wheelchair accessible minibuses.  Passengers pay a contribution towards the cost of their journeys based on local bus fares. Herefordshire Council subsidises our services.

Community Wheels in action Community Wheels minibus the organisation is committed to a number of innovative and invaluable transport services. All transport projects strongly promote the organisations ethos in providing services that overcome disadvantage, improve access to services in rural areas and promote volunteering. The service also has an accessible vehicle and a minibus that is available for multiple trips.

 

Wheels to work: This Project aims to assist people without their own transport and without access to public transport to seek and secure employment and/or training opportunities which, otherwise, would be denied to them.  We provide loan mopeds, driving lessons and vehicle repair grants to eligible candidates.

Concessionary travel

Herefordshire Council can supply a Senior Railcard to Herefordshire residents aged 60 or over at a 15% discount on the normal price (currently £17.00). Apply in person to Council Offices at Hereford (Town Hall, Garrick House, The Oval), Bromyard (Rowberry Street), Kington (Mill Street), Leominster (Corn Square), Ledbury (St. Katherine’s) and Ross-on-Wye (Swan House). Persons intending to obtain a Railcard should take with them proof of their age and address.

Bus Services: The Council is trying to make it easier for everyone to use public transport and over the last few years has invested to upgrade their services to operation by modern, low-floor, accessible. We also operate a concessionary fares scheme that provides free bus travel for older people and those with disabilities.

 

FREE BUS TRAVEL is available to Older People (Men and Women aged 60 and over) and many disabled people, with a Herefordshire Council Concessionary Bus Pass. The Pass is valid on all buses in Herefordshire including cross-boundary services to Ludlow, Tenbury Wells, Worcester. Malvern, Gloucester, Coleford, Monmouth, Abergavenny, Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, Presteigne and Knighton. Bus passes are valid for 10 years and no charge is made for them.

 

Older People, registered blind and partially sighted persons and anyone in receipt of the higher-rate mobility allowance should apply at any Post Office in Herefordshire, with proof of eligibility and a passport sized photograph.

 

Concessionary bus travel is only available to eligible persons who are also permanent residents of Herefordshire. A leaflet explaining the scheme in more detail is available from Post Offices or Council Offices.

The Ring and Ride Community Transport scheme provides invaluable services to the member of the local community. It is mainly operated by volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles (social car schemes) specially adapted minibuses (Community buses) and multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs).

 

In addition we have two minibuses, both equipped with wheelchair lifts.  The minibuses are available for hire, at a non-profit making fee, for local voluntary groups, organisations and clubs.  A driver is available if required.

 

Journeys must be booked 48 hours in advance for Ring and Ride, Ledbury.

The Life Line Car Scheme was set up to serve the population of Hereford City and 29 rural parishes who are relatively poorly served by public and community transport.  The aim of the charity is to help the elderly, disabled and disadvantaged in the local community who do not have access to provide or public means of transport.   Please phone for further information.

Malvern area has a Volunteer Car Service is available for people in the Malvern area to attend medical appointments.  A Shoparound service takes elderly and disabled people shopping and on outings. They also have a minibus that they are able to hire out.

National Rail Enquiries is a useful contact for getting information about rail travel for disabled people.  A leaflet, 'Rail Travel for Disabled Passengers' can be obtained from Railway Stations or can be ordered by phone from National Rail Enquiries.

 

There are ramps from wheelchairs available at manned stations.  A wheelchair is also available for travellers having difficulty walking the distances involved but without their own wheelchair.

Rail services are the responsibility of central government, through the Department of Transport, which has franchised a number of Train Operating Companies to provide the service on its behalf.

Access Travel helps people with a disability to plan holidays from booking flights to suitable accommodation.

ACCOMMODATION: All properties are well known to us as they have been personally inspected or have been suggested by a wheelchair user.  We can therefore discuss the accommodation with you and give recommendations on its suitability.  We offer a personal contact to all out clients which the larger tour operators are unable to give.  This is essential to provide for the individual needs of each of our many clients.

 

FLIGHT ONLY: We are please to offer special airfares on SCHEDULED and CHARTER aircraft to thoughts of destination worldwide.  We will happily provide quotes if you have your own accommodation or visiting friends in far off places.  We will also liaise with the airline to arrange any special services etc.

 

SPECIAL AIDS:  Hoists, shower chair etc.  can be hired in Amsterdam, Algarve, Florida and Tenerife.  Please contact us for further details.

 

ADAPTED VEHICLES:  certain resorts have vehicles which can accommodate travellers in their own wheelchairs and normally have a hoist or ramps to assist loading.

 

CAR HIRE: different models of cars including automatics can be arranged to suit each party at all our destination with very competitive rates.  These are available on request.  Self-drive cars with hand controls are available at a supplementary charge in the Algarve and Florida.
